Two figures below, an angel above. It gets read as the romance card, but its real subject is choice — the kind where taking one means not having the other, and where what you pick says who you are.
The Lovers usually shows up when the scale has already tipped. People in this spot try to gather more information, and the card's point is that more will not settle it. It is hard because both are genuinely fine, not because facts are missing. That narrows the criterion to one question: which option is closer to the person you want to be?
Read on a relationship, it weighs fit over pull. Wanting someone is half this card. The other half is whether the two of you hold the same things important. It is fairly cold about what happens when the first is there and the second is not.
Reversed, the decision is being deferred. Not choosing is still choosing, just without owning it. Or two people each want different things while both believe they want the same thing — which usually surfaces within half an hour of actually asking.
Narrowing the Lovers to romance goes wrong often. The centre of the card is choice rather than attraction, and choice is usually a question of what gets given up. It appears where you cannot have both, so treating it as a reassuring card leads to deferring the decision — and the deferred decision is what comes back reversed.
With the Chariot it marks the position after the choice, pushing ahead. Against the Hanged Man it means the choice has not been made. The Lovers is the card of choosing, and its neighbour tells you whether the choosing is ahead of you or behind.
