A knight lies on top of a tomb, hands joined in prayer on his chest, one sword laid flat beneath him. Three more swords hang on the wall pointing down, and there is a stained-glass window above. This is not a death. It is rest — the stretch between fights when the blade gets put down.

It shows up when the mind has been running too long. Checking work chat after hours, rehearsing tomorrow's conversation until you fall asleep, weekends that somehow never feel like weekends. The card says what is needed now is not an answer but a pause. The problem does not vanish while you stop thinking about it, but it looks a lot clearer when you come back.

Reversed, it points one of two ways. Either you missed the moment to rest and are sliding toward burnout, or you have rested enough and it is time to get back up. These are opposites that look alike from outside. How your body feels when you wake up is usually the most honest test.

What this card asks you to check is whether your rest is actually rest. Lying in bed while flicking between other people's news and work email puts the body down; the mind is still holding the sword.

The common misreading is 'things will stall'. Things do stop, but it is a stop you chose, which makes it preparation rather than loss. The knight in the picture has not taken off his armour, because he is someone who will get up again.

With the Hermit it says the time alone can run a little longer. With the Four of Cups the rest may be hardening into indifference, so check whether you are letting every offer that comes in during the break go past unopened.
