Reykjavík 🇮🇸

Reykjavík is the northernmost capital of any sovereign state. The city heats its buildings and water geothermally, which is why the hot tap smells faintly of sulphur — that is normal here. Hallgrímskirkja was designed after Iceland's basalt columns. On clear winter nights the aurora is visible from inside the city.

The highest nature reading on the board. Of everything available you wanted the city least — you're going to look at terrain rather than at people. Choosing the country where volcanoes, glaciers and hot springs sit within one drive isn't an accident.

Adventure reads high too. You picked it knowing it's cold, far and expensive, and for some people those conditions read as the appeal. With aesthetic high as well, this isn't endurance for its own sake — it's going to see something that doesn't exist elsewhere. The photographs aren't the goal; they just happen.

You travel well here with someone who lets the weather write the plan. In Iceland what you see today is decided by the sky, and a companion who can't accept that will spend the trip angry. In a bracket Reykjavík collects the reliable alternative vote. Where Paris, Tokyo and New York are splitting a similar pool, everyone who wants something else entirely arrives here at once. It's a minority square with unusually strong cohesion, which is why it survives more often than expected.

The nearest square is Cusco, then Cape Town — three places that are hard to reach and chosen for their landscape. The furthest is New York, and that gap is among the widest in the pack. These two split taste cleanly.
