Tokyo anchors the most populous metropolitan area on earth. Sensō-ji is the city's oldest temple, and the Shibuya crossing empties thousands of people into the intersection every time the lights change. Tokyo Tower, built in 1958, was modelled on the Eiffel Tower and stands about thirteen metres taller. It photographs its own scale, which is why it holds up well in a bracket.

Nature is near the floor and adventure sits exactly at the middle — neither chasing the unfamiliar nor repeating only what you know. Tokyo happens to be that kind of city, which is why the fit is good: hard to get lost on a first visit, still something new on a tenth.

Aesthetic reads above the middle. That combination isn't fussiness so much as a liking for things done neatly. You'll queue for the place that does it properly, and you notice a well-made object in a convenience store. People who enjoy small precision over big events pick Tokyo.

The right travel companion here tolerates a queue. In Tokyo the places doing it properly usually involve waiting, and someone who reads that wait as waste turns every meal into a negotiation. Tokyo survives brackets because it has so few weaknesses. It loses to anyone who wants nature and scores above average on nearly every other axis. It doesn't win spectacularly, but it almost never goes out early — which is the most dangerous kind of square in a tournament.

The nearest square is New York, then Rome, though Tokyo reads higher on aesthetic than either — the tidy end of the same urban taste. The furthest is Cusco, which you can read as predictability against its opposite.
