An old man stands alone on a snowy peak holding a lamp. There is a star inside it, and the light does not reach far — one step ahead, no more.
The Hermit usually means withdraw. You have taken so many opinions that you have lost your own, or held twenty meetings that decided nothing. This card says stop gathering and sit with it. Not because the answer is not out there, but because too much of the outside has already come in.
That the lamp lights only one step is the heart of it. To anyone who believes they need the whole plan before moving, this card says you do not. See the next step and take it. That is how mountains get climbed anyway.
Reversed, the retreat has run long. You went in to think and forgot to come out, or you are grinding alone somewhere asking would have solved. Being alone and hiding are different things: the first has a date on it, the second does not. Asking yourself when you are coming out will tell you which one this is.
The Hermit gets read as loneliness, but the solitude here was chosen rather than imposed. The lamp is the point. There are questions to ask other people and questions only you can answer, and this card marks the second kind. If company would have solved it, this card would not have come up.
With the Star, time alone leads into recovery. Against the Moon that isolation is clouding your judgement instead. The Hermit has no fixed good or bad, so you read it together with how long it has been going on.
