A young figure stands in a field, ploughed furrows and trees behind, holding a single pentacle up in both hands and studying it. Mountains rise in the distance. He is not about to spend it; he is trying to work out what it is. As a court card, it reads as a person rather than a stage: someone learning, someone handling the first thing they have earned with care.

It might be you or someone near you. A new graduate starting a budget with their first pay packet, a colleague who has begun studying for a qualification after work, a teenager opening a first savings account. Still clumsy, but diligent, picking things up one at a time.

Reversed, the diligence scatters. One way is all plan and no start — the course is paid for and the first lesson still unwatched. The other is dabbling in everything until nothing sticks. If you keep studying things you never end up using, it is this one.

The question is whether anything you are learning could be put to real use this month. If so, start there. If not, narrow it down.

It is often read as 'beginner, long way to go.' But the figure in the picture is in no hurry. What the card values is the attitude more than the skill: mistakes happen, and the coin still gets studied rather than tossed aside.

With the Eight of Pentacles learning turns into steady practice. Next to the Page of Wands the enthusiasm is there but the hands have not caught up yet.
