A family gathers under an archway. In the foreground an old, white-bearded man in a patterned cloak sits with two dogs beside him; further in stand a young couple and a child. Ten pentacles are laid over the whole scene. This is not one person's success but ground built up across generations.

It usually shows up around things meant to last. Talking with your parents about the house, deciding whether to take on the family business, merging two households before a wedding. The card is less about what you earn this year than about what will still be standing in ten.

Reversed, that ground shakes. One way is trouble inside the family, opinions splitting over money or what gets passed down. The other is inheriting a shape that does not fit you — when the path the family expects and the one you want are different, this card tends to turn over.

The question it asks is whether the decision in front of you is one you would still leave as it is in five or ten years. When the easy choice and the lasting one differ, that question tells them apart.

Reading it purely as 'an inheritance' is narrow. What gets passed down here is not only money but habits, the mood of a household, the way a family does or does not talk about money. A good share of how you handle money was handed to you before you noticed.

With the Ten of Cups it reads as a family that has both the warmth and the means. Next to the Tower it marks a crack in a family foundation you trusted to hold.
