A ferryman poles a small boat across the water. A huddled woman and a child sit inside, and six swords stand upright in the boat. The water on one side is choppy; ahead it is smooth. It is a picture of moving from a hard place to an easier one. Nothing is fully healed and nothing has been thrown overboard — the swords come along.

It shows up when you are past the worst and changing ground. Leaving the job you had been gritting your teeth through for a new team, moving out of a house where the arguments never stopped, catching your breath after ending something that dragged on too long. It is less a happy departure than a quiet crossing. Still, the direction is better.

Reversed, there are two paths. In one you cannot leave the place you need to leave. In the other you did leave, but brought all the old worries with you, so nothing feels different. This is where the six swords in the boat start to feel heavy.

What this card asks you to check is whether you have sorted what to bring and what to leave. Bring the practical skill you built at the old job. The line someone there used about what kind of person you are can stay on the bank.

It is often narrowed to a travel or moving card. Sometimes it is literal, but more often it describes the mind shifting one step on. You can stay in the same place, and if the way you hold the situation has changed, the boat has already left.

With the Eight of Cups you are leaving out of disappointment, so the urge to look back may be strong. With the Star the far shore is closer than it looks, and the calm stretch arrives soon.
