Ace of Wands
완드 에이스

Drive and the things you start. Hot and fast.

Upright

a spark · new venture · drive

Reversed

false start · no ignition · flat

A hand comes out of a cloud holding a stout wand. The wood is still sprouting, and a few leaves have already come loose and are drifting down. Below lie a river, trees and a castle on a far hill. Nothing has been built yet. The Ace of Wands is the first flare of wanting to do something, the heat that arrives before any plan does.

It usually turns up when an idea has just caught. The side project that came to you on the walk home, the course you keep meaning to restart, the moment you put your hand up for something you have never done. There is no result yet, only drive, and the card says the drive is real. Sparks also cool if left alone — one way to read those falling leaves.

Reversed, it goes one of two ways. Either it will not catch at all — you keep saying you want to, but the first step you have set yourself is too big to take. Or it catches and dies: a loud start on Monday and nothing left by Thursday. Neither is about a lack of will; both come from the wrong first step.

The question here is small on purpose. What is the smallest thing you could do today? If an answer comes straight away, the fire has caught. If nothing comes, it is still a wish.

People often read it as 'the new thing will succeed'. The Ace speaks to the start, not the outcome. The card's job ends at ignition.

With the Magician, materials and drive are both in place and there is little left to wait for. With the Ace of Pentacles, the thing you want to do arrives with money or an opening attached. The Ace of Wands is a spark, and the card beside it shows what it is about to light.
