The Sagrada Família broke ground in 1882 and is still unfinished. Gaudí knew he would not see it completed and left the design so others could carry it on. Park Güell was planned as an upmarket housing estate; the plots did not sell, so it became a park. Few cities of that size keep a working beach inside the street grid.

Aesthetic reads high and adventure low — you want to see beautiful things without having to hunt for them, and Barcelona is shaped exactly that way. The buildings and the streets hand it over without you working for it.

Nature sits slightly below the middle, which in a coastal city means the beach is an option rather than the reason. People who like walking through the afternoon and eating slowly into the night tend to press this square.

You travel well here with someone who can eat late. In a bracket Barcelona splits a pool with Paris and Rome — all three draw the same kind of taste — and among them it reads as the lightest, easiest choice. The nearest square is Rome, then Paris. Of the three European squares this one reads highest on nature, so when someone picks it out of the three, the coastline is usually the reason. The furthest is Cusco.
