Cusco 🇵🇪

Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire. The Spanish built on top of Inca stonework rather than removing it, so many walls are Inca masonry below and colonial above. At 3,400 metres, most visitors lose the first day to the altitude. It is also where the route to Machu Picchu begins.

Adventure is at the ceiling and nature close to it — the least comfortable choice in the pack. The altitude takes your breath on the first day and the journey there is long. Picking it anyway means you don't define travel as rest.

Aesthetic reads low: the point isn't a good photograph, it's the fact of having actually got there. This is the trip you talk about at length afterwards, and the next destination will probably be chosen by the same standard.

You travel well here with someone who agrees to write off the first two days. The altitude needs adjusting to, and moving the moment you land destabilises everything after it — a companion who calls that waste will put the trip off balance immediately. In a bracket Cusco draws a small, committed vote. Not many people choose it, and the ones who do choose it with conviction. It gets pushed out early against broad opponents and beats anything of similar character outright.

The nearest square is Reykjavík, then Cape Town — three places that cost effort to reach, so the taste overlaps. The furthest is Paris, and that distance is the largest in the pack. Nearly the whole range of this bracket sits between those two.
