Jemaa el-Fnaa is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage — not the square itself but what happens in it: storytellers, medicine sellers, musicians. The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque is the tallest structure in the city, and building higher is not permitted. The souks branch so narrowly that maps stop being much help once you are inside.

Adventure and aesthetic both read high — you enjoy being dropped somewhere unfamiliar and you want that unfamiliarity to look good. Marrakech arrives as colour, sound and smell all at once, which satisfies both at the same time.

Nature sits exactly at the middle, and given how close the desert is, that's the tell: the weight of this choice is on human crowding, not on landscape. People who need order get worn down here. People who draw energy from disorder come alive.

You travel well here with someone who doesn't experience haggling as stress. Plenty in Marrakech carries no fixed price, so every purchase involves a conversation, and a companion who finds that draining will dread the market. In a bracket Marrakech wins on photographs — the colour is distinct enough to persuade in a single frame — while the actual experience is far louder than the picture. It's a square with a wide gap between expectation and reality, and only the people who enjoy that gap come back.

The nearest square is Cairo, then Istanbul — the three move nearly as one block and split the vote when they meet. The furthest is New York: the ordered city against the unordered one.
