The Colosseum was completed in AD 80 and held well over fifty thousand people. What makes Rome unusual is that the ruins are not inside a museum. The Roman Forum sits in the middle of the city, and the Trevi Fountain is simply on a street corner. Two-thousand-year-old stone shares the pavement with someone carrying groceries home.

Nature reads low and aesthetic reads high — a taste that responds to what people built rather than to landscape, which is exactly what Rome is. The ruins aren't shut inside a museum; they're on the street, so walking is already the attraction.

Adventure is low, though. This isn't about finding where nobody goes; it's about checking the famous thing in person. That isn't the dull choice. You pick this city because you know the difference between seeing something photographed fifty times and standing in front of it.

You travel well here with someone who handles heat. Most of what you came for is outdoors and shade is scarce, so in summer your stamina becomes the itinerary. Rome is strong early in a bracket: the name alone produces an image, no explanation required, and needing no explanation wins votes. Among people who've actually been, though, opinion divides — the expectation is set so high that clearing it is genuinely hard.

The nearest square is Paris, and they sit almost on top of each other, with Barcelona next — three European squares moving as one block. When the vote splits they eat each other, so all three lose if they land in the same bracket. The furthest is Cusco.
