You'd have actually run the local ledger. How much grain, how many days of labour, who paid what — the things you can see and count, kept exact. When something went wrong you'd have stepped in before your betters did, not because you craved the front but because you knew it ran when you held it.
You set the rules and don't drift from them. You wouldn't have doctored the books out of pity, and to you that was fairness. The town's affairs rarely collapsed because of it — and to those asking for a little leeway, you stayed the hard one. Both are true.
Working one seat for years suits you. You'd have waved others off and chosen to remain, not from fear but because there was something here to keep. If you still see a task through to the end and can't leave a mess alone, that habit is very old.
